King's Lock Inn, Middlewich

We now have the Folk'n'Ale beer list online!!!

Welcome to the King's Lock Inn, a small free house on the banks of the Trent & Mersey canal in Middlewich, Cheshire. Our new website is coming soon - until then, find us on Facebook and @kingslockinn on Twitter or see our reviews on Trip Advisor. We were number one restaurant in the whole of Cheshire out of 2,077 restaurants - and we're still ranked as one of the top 10 pubs in Cheshire! We are in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2017. We have a sample menu online but it gets changed every day depending on what's available and in season locally; on Sundays we have the option of traditional roast dinners, done to King's Lock standard and with no washing-up to do...

We have at least 4 local cask ales, a couple of craft ciders, 2 taps of Freedom lager from Staffordshire (rotating between Freedom 4, Freedom Pilsner and Freedom Rye), Pravha lager from the Czech Republic and a rotating tap with things like Vedett Extra White. See our Twitter feed @kingslockinn for what's on the bar. There's some interesting bottles in our fridges, from unusual alcohol-free options to Titanic Stout (and Plum Porter in bottle if it's not on cask), Lowlander porter from the Netherlands, Benediktiner wheat beer and a great gluten-free selection from First Chop in Salford.

If you've enjoyed your time at the King's Lock, please leave a review on Trip Advisor, nominate us for the Good Food Guide, or CAMRA members can rate us on We give discounts to CAMRA members. Please note we're only a little pub and we don't have very many tables inside for sit-down meals. It's not so bad at lunchtime and when the weather is good enough to use the outside tables, but we advise booking on 01606 836 894 if you want to eat in the evenings and/or you're coming from a distance. If we're full on a particular night then you might want to try our sister pub, the Red Lion, which is only 10 minutes away on the big roundabout in Winsford, or at the southern end of the Weaver Navigation if you're coming by boat. They have more room, and share our chefs although their focus is more on live music, they are the current Northwest Entertainment Pub of the Year. Their phone number is 01606 869 156.

Opening times

We're open for drinks from noon until 11pm every day. The kitchen is closed on Mondays but otherwise we do food from noon until 9pm, except on Saturdays (9.30pm) and Sunday (5pm). Do check if you're coming from a distance to eat. If you're running a bit late, then please let us know - we may be able to offer you something, but at the same time we can't promise it, our kitchen staff do have homes to go to! Booking is advised, at least at weekends.

*First* Tuesday of the month from 9pm-ish - Open Mic Night with a free pint for performers and free snacks for all. Amazing musicians travel miles to come to this night, it's always a good one. See our Facebook page for videos of previous nights (and to check that it's on - the date has been known to change for reasons outside our control, but it will almost always be the first Tuesday from now on).

Folk & Boats festival 16-18 June - as usual we will be a big part of the FAB Fringe, with lots of free music throughout the weekend in a marquee behind the pub. The marquee bar will be devoted to Tatton Brewery including the rarely seen VIPA. The main bar will see over 20 of the best beers from Cheshire including newcomers Chapter Brewing from Sutton Weaver. We now have the beer list online!

Loyalty scheme

As part of the Cornerstone Inns family, we offer a loyalty scheme that works across all our award-winning pubs in Winsford and Northwich as well. You could get a free bottle of wine with your meal, or 30% off a group meal. We'll even give you points just for signing up!!!!

Getting here

You can find the King's Lock on the Sandbach road on the south side of Middlewich - our address is 1 Booth Lane, Middlewich CW10 0JJ and our satnav coordinates are 53.187 -2.4406 or 53°11'13"N 2°26'26"W. Two bus routes run past our door - the 42 bus goes hourly to Crewe until 20:10 and to Congleton via Holmes Chapel until 20:35. The 37 bus runs to Crewe and Northwich (via Sandbach and Winsford) during the day, but only between Sandbach Common and Winsford Guildhall in the evenings. At least that lets you get to Sandbach station (Crewe-Manchester line) and Winsford station (Crewe-Liverpool line), the last bus to Sandbach is 22:38 and to Winsford is 23:09. Do check those times on the bus company websites - they may be slightly different on Saturdays and buses don't normally run on Sundays.

Folk with boats can find us at lock 71 on the Trent & Mersey canal, a few yards south of the junction with the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union (aka the Wardle Canal). Let our friends at the King's Lock Chandlery attend to your boat, whilst the crew refuel next door! There's visitor moorings just south of the lock, and also a short distance along the Middlewich Branch. Plenty of walks are possible along the towpaths of the two canals, and well-behaved dogs are most welcome in the pub - please ask us for walking directions.
